Lysed & Laked
Lysed Blood
Lysed Blood is defibrinated blood which is frozen causing the red blood cells to lyse (rupture), releasing their contents into the serum. Lysed Blood is often used in selective culture media, as some organisms show increased growth in the presence of the red cells’ contents, as opposed to the whole intact cells.
Laked Blood
Lysed blood is defibrinated blood which is centrifuged to remove cell membranes and other debris. Material from inside the cells (hemoglobin, etc.) remain. Laked Blood is often used in selective culture media, as some organisms show increased growth in the presence of the cells’ contents.
